What I like in fiction

I don't like horror and torture and dark cruelty.

I do like female characters, and a fascinating world.

I like to wonder about a character's past -- and their future.

I like stories with some science that is indistinguishable from magic.

I like stories with an idea that I can explore and carry round in my teeth to worry at, bury, dig up, chew on and bury again.

  1. I think I agree with you on all of these points.

I also like it when a character/their world is so absorbing that when I finish, I immediately want to start reading the book again just to stay there with them.

  2. Great thing to think about. Off the top of my head -

I like a setting that is as central as a character.

I like a character who welcomes me to their world, but is able to surprise me too.

I sometimes like it when magic happens in otherwise normal circumstances.

I sometimes like to travel to remote uninhabited destinations.

I like characters with unusual professions or hobbies.
